THUNDER BAY — A labour disruption on the Thunder Bay waterfront has been averted, at least for the time being.
About 180 grainhandlers employed by elevator operators Richardson, Viterra and Superior Elevator were poised to go on strike over the weekend.
But the members of the United Steelworkers union revoked their notice of strike action after arrangements were completed for mediation.
A federal mediator is scheduled to oversee three days of talks between the two parties this week.
USWÂ staff representative Herb Daniher said if negotiations collapse, the union will again give 72 hours notice of a strike.
The previous collective agreement expired on Feb. 1.
According to the union, it’s been at least two decades since Thunder Bay grainhandlers went on strike.
